Do you ever have one of those days in which you are about 99% sure that you are actually an android programmed in a lab, your every decision monitored and controlled by scientific operators?
Hi, I'm Christy O'Shoney, co-host of the Pilot Party podcast, a show which celebrates the wonderful and frequently awkward world of TV pilots. You may have forgotten that such a podcast existed because, well, we haven't put out any new episodes for a while. In fact, the last episode we released centered around the Netflix summer sensation, Stranger Things, and that basically feels like it was a lifetime ago. (Also, I just realized we never wrote show notes for that episode. Oooowhoops.)
Anyway, it's been a busy season for me and the D-man (AKA Daniel, my co-host and husband), and as hobby podcasters, we only feel slightly bad about our massive two month hiatus. The thing is we've been up to some pretty good stuff instead -- him: a new job, and me: grad school and book-finishing. That said, we'll skip the profuse apologies and instead move onto the exciting news: WE. ARE. BACK.
In this week's episode of Pilot Party, we are discussing Westworld, the sci-fi-western hybrid from the creative (and often depraved) minds at HBO. I mean, that's part of what we're discussing. There is a good chunk of the podcast dedicated to the emotional roller coaster I went on when we received our first negative iTunes review. But mostly, we're talking Westworld.
And holy artificial-intelligence-oly guys, this show has everything: robots, blood, fan theories, boobs, James Marsden's cheekbones -- everything.
If you are already watching, and thus way past the show's pilot, here is a quick refresher of what happens in the episode we are covering, courtesy of HBO's synopsis: As another day of fantasy plays out in Westworld -- a vast, remote park where guests pay top dollar to share wild-west adventures with android "hosts" -- top programmer Bernard Lowe alerts park founder Dr. Robert Ford about incidents of aberrant behavior cropping up in some recently re-coded hosts.
Sounds pretty great, right? Well...
Throughout the podcast, you'll find that I, in particular, have some complicated feelings about this show, with thoughts ranging from "This is a masterpiece!" to "I'd literally rather watch anything else." However, Daniel, as per usual, has a more positive outlook. So if you dug the pilot or if you thought it was largely degrading to humankind, either way, your opinions will be validated in this podcast.
Oh, also, by the way, we recorded this before the election, so if you sense an unwarranted optimism in our voices, that's why.
Last thing, promise: If you dig Pilot Party, and you want to hear more from us, we'd love for you to hop on our mailing list! Why exactly? Well, moving forward, we want to build a new official website so that I don't have to list these show notes on my personal blog, and we'd love to give you a big heads up whenever that thing goes live. Interested in following along? Just click below:
Aaaaaaanyway, without further adieu adieu to you and you and you, here's the latest addition of Pilot Party!
Another thing to note before we go: we have a brand new theme song! It took us weeks to decide on one, but we eventually landed on a synthesized track from Matt Oakley because it sounds like a theme song from an 80s TV show about high school mathletes. I don't know, it just felt like us.
Lastly, here are some ways you can keep up with the podcast:
